2016 Jaguar XE

Jaguar introduced its new XE sedan in a way only the folks from Coventry, England could.

On a stage at London's Earl's Court Exhibition Center, the company presented its newest sedan in a grand, two hour-long musical extravaganza that chronicled the company's history through the eyes of a young car designer.

But when you look past the glitz and glamour of the event, it becomes clear that Jaguar realizes very well that its fortunes for the next decade or two hinge on the success of the XE.

While the stunning F-Type reaffirmed Jag as an aspirational brand, the XE is the car that has the potential to fill the company's coffers in a way its other models can't. Although the XF and XJ are great cars, these high-priced, very luxurious rides simply do not generate enough sales volume for Jaguar to notch profits like BMW or Mercedes.

Much as Tesla's hopes hinge on its upcoming mass market Model III, Jaguar needs the XE to succeed for it gain a more solid financial footing.

2016 Jaguar XE SFor the first time since the company discontinued the X-Type in 2009, it has a car to compete in the cutthroat small executive sedan market. Although the X-Type sold reasonably well, the Ford-based 4-door wasn't able to match up against industry leaders, such as the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, and Mercedes C-Class.

The American-designed X-type was saddled with poor reliability, an aging Ford chassis, and a look so odd that even the deft skills of Jaguar designer Ian Callum weren't much help.

The XE, on the other hand, is a very different beast. Designed from scratch by Callum's award-winning design team, the XE exuded Jaguar-ness: Power and presence brim beneath its sleek exterior.

"Our mission was to create an exciting and dynamic design clearly reflecting the XE positioning as a serious driver’s car," said Callum.

"The cab-rearward proportions and tight packaging achieve that and give the XE the appearance of movement even when it’s standing still. It bears a strong family resemblance to the F-TYPE and will stand apart in the crowd."2016 Jaguar XE S Looks aside, the performance is there as well. Power for the newest Cat from Coventry is supplied by Jaguar's stellar 3-liter supercharged V6, and engine that's shared with the F-Type sports car. Producing 340hp, the baby Jag will be able to sprint from 0-60 in a scant 4.9 seconds. In addition to the engine, the XE will also share the smooth-shifting ZF 8-speed gearbox with its siblings.

2016 Jaguar XE SThe XE's stylish cabin will feature soft-touch leather materials and brushed metallic trim. The car will also mark the debut of Jaguar's new InControl infotainment system, centered around an impressive 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. Jaguar claims that InControl will allow navigation maps to be more user-friendly, with tablet-like pinch-to-zoom functionality.

2016 Jaguar XE SThe XE will also be chock full of electronic goodies, such as adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition and even a new laser heads-up-display.

2016 Jaguar XE SWhile the XE launches worldwide in 2015, North American customers will have to wait until 2016 to get their hands on Jaguar's latest offering.

Until then, take a look at this awesome TestDriven video that shows the XE's action packed journey from the factory to its debut in London.

Only 6 Of This Jaguar-Inspired Watch Will Ever Be Made

Jag Watch 3

In 1963, Jaguar began work on the Special GT E-Type project, a limited-edition series of special lightweight, aluminum-bodied versions of its E-Type sports car. The company initially planned a run of 18 vehicles, but only 12 were ever completed. Now, more than 50 years later, Jaguar plans to use the six remaining original chassis to finish the project, hand building each car to the original specifications.

In honor of this historic event, Jaguar’s timekeeping partner, the British watchmaker Bremont, is offering a new timepiece to just six owners of these new extremely limited vehicles, the Bremont Lightweight E-Type. The 43 mm watch features a black dial that resembles the cars’ RPM gauge, complete with a redline indicator and watch hands modeled after gauge needles. The central band of the watch’s white-gold case is made from aluminum taken from the new cars’ body panels and will be anodized in the same color as the corresponding car. Further references include a crown shaped like the Dunlop racing tires fitted to the cars and a strap made from the same Connolly leather that is used for the interior trim. The automatic movement’s winding rotor, visible through the watch’s back crystal, has been made to resemble the car’s three-spoke steering wheel and even features a real wooden rim. Bremont is not announcing a price for the watch. (www.bremont.com)

I Spent A Weekend Driving The Most Beautiful Car I've Ever Seen — The Jaguar F-Type Coupe

Jaguar F Type Coupe R

The Jaguar F-Type Coupe is without question the most gorgeous car I've ever driven.

The F-Type needed to be beautiful. Jaguar has spent over two decades trying to remind people of the company's legacy of stylish, high-performance sports cars, like the E-Type from the 1960s, XKSS from the mid-1950s, and the XJ-220 from the late 1980s.

With the F-Type Coupe, the carmaker has at long last erased 20 years of misses and near-misses on the design front. With this car, all is forgiven — you just can't stop looking at it. I certainly couldn't during the weekend I spent with the F-Type Coupe on a visit to Atlanta.

The F-Type has everything you would ever want in a Jaguar — or any sports car for that matter. I've already mentioned how great the car looks. But how about tons of horsepower? Check. Confident handling? Check.

And there's a bonus: the rumble of the F-Type's massive 5.0-liter V8 and the machine-gun backfire of the exhaust that goes with it.

It's an intoxicating combination.

My $100,000 test car — in fact, the top-of-the-range F-Type R — came equipped with just about every available option, including an excellent infotainment system, GPS navigation, and luscious, body-hugging leather sport seats. If a hundred grand is too steep for you, Jaguar will gladly sell you an "entry-level" supercharged V6 version, with 340 horsepower and a $65,000 asking price.

I was able to put the stunning Jag and its rampaging 550-horsepower V8 through its paces on city streets, suburban highways, and even the twisty mountain roads of North Georgia's Piedmont.

Landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport proved to be a breeze. As an Atlanta native, 85-degree Georgia weather in October reminded me what I gave up when I moved to New York.

However, what sweetened the pot even more was the knowledge that I would have this beauty in my driveway for the next couple of days.

The car's stunning good looks are going to make fans of classic Jaguar design very happy.

Jaguar F-Type R

Editorial note: Business Insider's Benjamin Zhang reviewed the F-Type Coupe recently and was blown away by its beauty.

Deciding two wheels weren’t enough, Jaguar unveiled its 2016 F-Type Coupe R in South Africa, which puts all four on the floor instead of just the two in the back.

AutoGuide reports the sports car is able to charge from the starting grid to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, hitting the speed wall at 186 mph.

The AWD R will be just one of 12 options available to F-Type shoppers by 2016, expanding from just six at present. The expansion is due to the introduction of AWD.

The F-Type Coupe R was also used to help establish communications protocol between the pilot behind the Bloodhound SSC — who will break the sound barrier on the ground on its way to over 1,000 mph — and the vehicle’s team, radioing a jet flying 50 feet above the ground at 500 mph over the Hakskeen Pan.

More details and photos will come next week, when the AWD F-Type Coupe R rolls down the ramp at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Jaguar May Be Working On An Electric Sports Car

Jaguar F Type Coupe R Light

Carmakers do their best to keep future-model plans a secret, but the sprawling bureaucracy of today's corporate operations can sometimes make that difficult.

A part of that work involves protecting intellectual property for potential new models and technologies that may not even be confirmed for production.

The fact that Jaguar recently trademarked the name "EV-Type" brings up some interesting possibilities.

The registration was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on October 30--and also with a similar registry in Europe--for use on "motor land vehicles" and other applications, Motor Authority reports.

Jaguar hasn't confirmed any plans for an electric car, but the use of the "-Type" designation indicates that it's at least considering a plug-in sports car.

While Jaguar used to offer the S-Type and X-Type sedans (as well as an X-Type wagon, briefly), that style of name is currently used only by the F-Type two-seat sports car.

The name EV-Type is also a somewhat playful reference to the car that inspired the F-Type, the classic E-Type.

Much of Jaguar's recent history with hybrid and plug-in electric powertrains has also involved performance vehicles.

The C-X16 concept--which previewed the production F-Type--featured a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission, paired with an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack.

More audaciously, Jaguar also tinkered with the C-X75--a mid-engined supercar that first appeared at the 2010 Paris Motor Show with a plug-in powertrain that included a pair of gas-turbine engines.

Those were replaced by a 1.6-liter gasoline engine in an ultimately-failed attempt to make the C-X75 production-feasible. It was fun while it lasted.

It's unclear whether the EV-Type has any connection to those previous experiments, or if Jaguar has any serious plans for the name at all at the moment.

Yet with global emissions standards getting stricter, Jaguar may have to take a more serious look at electrification in the near future.

When it does, at least it'll have a clever name on hand.

Jaguar Wants To Make Blind Spots A Thing Of The Past

Jaguar XJ Pillars

Jaguar is currently working on a new virtual-reality cockpit that will make blind spots a thing of the past.

Called the "360 Urban Virtual Windscreen," Jaguar's newest assistance technology will allow the driver to see straight through the car's pillars. In urban conditions, this will allow those behind the wheel of a Jag to enjoy a complete view of their surroundings.

A Jag turning at an intersection will have "virtually" transparent "A" pillars so the driver can see if there are oncoming cars, bicyclists, or pedestrians.

For particularly dangerous obstacles or perilously close pedestrians, the system will automatically flag the interloper and project a warning on the windshield using the car's heads-up-display.

Jaguar Virtual Windshield

When reversing or changing lanes on highways, Jaguar's virtual technology will also render the car's "B" and "C" pillars invisible, as well, so the driver will have a less obstructed view over his or her shoulder. To avoid having a distracting amount of video screens on, the pillar-mounted displays activate based on the orientation of the driver's head.

Parent company Jaguar Land Rover's virtual-windshield technology is a concept similar to the see-through hood the company debuted earlier this year. That piece of techno-wizardry allows Land Rover drivers to see a live video feed of the terrain underneath the SUV, projected onto the windshield — giving the impression of a transparent hood.

Unlike the Land Rover, which is limited to the using cameras and a heads up display to project images onto the windshield, the new Jaguar system builds upon that by embedding video displays into all of the car's pillars. This creates a physical bank of video displays that serve as electronic extension of the car's physical windows.

The Jaguar Land Rover virtual windshield is still in its developmental phase, but we don't be shocked to find them on the company's luxury offerings in the near future.

Jaguar's 'Ghost Car' Navigation System Is Straight Out Of Science Fiction

Jaguar Ghost Car Navigation

Jaguar just unveiled a proposed new navigation system that's unlike anything we've ever seen.

Most modern navigation systems instruct drivers using a series of arrows or at best a pictographic representation of a highway exit. However, Jaguar's new experimental system abandons the arrows and instead projects an image of a "Ghost Car" for the driver to follow.

Officially known as "Follow-Me Ghost Car Navigation," the system uses the heads-up-display technology to project an illuminated "ghost car" that looks to be driving right in front of the actual vehicle.

"Driving on city streets can be a stressful experience, but imagine being able to drive across town without having to look at road signs, or be distracted trying to locate a parking space as you drive by," said Jaguar Land Rover's director of research and technology, Dr. Wolfgang Epple, in a statement.

"We want to present all of this information on a Heads-Up Display in the driver's eye-line, so the driver doesn't have to seek it out for themselves and take their eyes off the road ahead."

Jaguar Land Rover Virtual Windshield Ghost Car

In addition to automotive apparition, the experimental navigation system also projects onto the windshield an array of strategic information for the driver to use — such as parking guidance, stop light duration, and geographic landmarks.

This new nav system is related to the company's 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen technology, which features an array of video displays mounted around the car's cabin that virtually eliminates driving blind spots around the vehicle.

As with Jaguar's Virtual Windscreen, there isn't a set date for the system's debut in a production vehicle. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it in the next generation Jaguar XJL Portfolio or Range Rover Autobiography.

The Jaguar That The Villain Will Drive In The New Bond Movie Is Terrifyingly Awesome

Jaguar C-X75 Bond

Jaguar is taking their "Good to be Bad" marketing campaign to the next level. The English automaker's sinister C-X75 supercar concept will be the vehicle of choice for the villain in the upcoming James Bond flick "Spectre," Autocar reports.

The Jag C-X75 will face off against Bond's brand new Aston Martin DB10 that was commissioned specially for the 24th installment in the film series.

According to the automotive publication, sources "involved with the project" report that the supercar concept is undergoing modifications for the upcoming film. This includes the removal of the C-X75's 800 horsepower hybrid powertrain. In its place will be Jaguar's trusty 5.0 liter supercharged V8 engine, from the company's phenomenal F-Type sports car.

Jaguar C-X75

Jaguar officials have declined to confirm their involvement in "Spectre" with Autocar. The publication says that the automaker simply told them to await a formal announcement in 2015.

Should the C-X75 actually make its way into the next Bond flick, it will continue a long series of appearances for Jaguar in the film franchise. Most recently, the company's flagship XJ sedan served as Dame Judy Dench's ride M in 2012's "Skyfall."

There is also a recent trend for Jaguars serving as transportation for Bond film baddies. In 2006's "Casino Royale," Mads Mikkelsen's card playing Le Chiffre transported a captured Bond in a Jaguar XJ8 sedan.

But the company's most famous Bond appearance in recent memory maybe the villainous bright green rocket and machine gun-equipped XJR convertible from 2002's "Die Another Day."

Jaguar C-X75

The carbon-fiber C-X75 hybrid supercar concept first debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show to rave reviews. The car even managed to take home Autoweek's "Best in Show" award.

"This will be the finest looking and most innovative Jaguar ever created,” said Jaguar head designer Ian Callum. "Even in the world of supercars, we can still produce the most beautiful."

"C-X75 is an exciting project for us and a clear statement of Jaguar’s intent to continue creating bold, innovative and beautiful performance cars."

It was hoped that the model would make it into production. Sadly, however, Jaguar decided to cancel the project in 2013. Fortunately, many of the C-X75's design elements made it into the company's gorgeous F-Type coupe and convertible.

Jaguar C-X75

Earlier this month, the cast and car for "Spectre" was officially presented to the public in a special ceremony at Pinewood Studios, where the films are made. With principal photography just underway, the film is expected to make its way to theaters by November 6, 2015.

Jaguar's First-Ever SUV Is Stunning

Jaguar C-X17

Jaguar announced the imminent arrival of the first crossover SUV in company history this week at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. The SUV — christened the "F-PACE"— will be based on Jaguar's well received C-X17 concept car.

Founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, Jaguar has built a fine reputation for building stylish, luxurious, and sporty vehicles. However, it has never ventured into the booming luxury crossover SUV market.

"The Jaguar F-PACE, inspired by the F-TYPE, represents a perfectly judged balance of style, performance, and practicality," Jaguar design director Ian Callum said.

"It offers a unique combination of Jaguar sports car inspired exterior design, fused beautifully with a thoroughly practical and spacious luxury interior. The F-PACE is our family sports car."

Jaguar C-X17

Since 2008, both Jaguar and its stablemate Land Rover/Range Rover have been under the direction of India's Tata Group.  Many questioned whether the launch of a Jaguar off-roader would cannibalize sales from Land Rover — especially with presence of smaller models such as the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

However, company executives told Business Insider that not only will the crossover not steal sales from its corporate siblings, the research shows that 90% of future F-PACE sales will involve stealing customers from its competitors.

This assessment makes sense. Although a Jaguar SUV and Land Rover/Range Rover may seem like direct competitors based on price and available features, the brands are actually going after different customers.

While LR/RR possesses a more rugged go-anywhere-in-luxury feel, Jaguar is more urbane and suave. It's difficult to picture the family hunting hound in the back seat of a Jag.

Jaguar C-X17

As for the somewhat goofy name, Callum told AutoExpress that the goal was to convey a sense of sportiness. Although a few other names, such as the "X-Type" were considered — the company eventually settled on the F-PACE designation. Besides, there was already a Jaguar X-Type, a compact luxury sedan from the early 2000s

The legendary designer believes that "after time, people will get used to [the name]."

Jaguar has not yet released any official pricing or engine information. However, we fully believe the company's terrific 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine will be included.

I had the opportunity to spend a few days behind the wheel of Jag's flagship XJL sedan equipped with a 340 horsepower version of the engine. It was fantastic. The supercharged 6-cylinder handled the 4,000-plus-lb., 17-ft.-long luxury limo with remarkable ease.

However, Jaguar could also join corporate stablemates Evoque and Discovery Sport and offer the same Ford EcoBoost-derived 240-horsepower 4-cylinder engine.

The Jaguar F-PACE crossover is expected to go on sale in 2016. We will follow up as soon as more information is available.

Hoegh Osaka Range Rover

The Höegh Osaka cargo ship that nearly capsized off of the southern coast of England earlier this month has been re-floated and towed back to port.

According to the BBC, the Norwegian-owned auto carrier and its cargo of more than 1,200 cars, SUVs, and construction equipment has been unloaded at the docks in Southampton, where the ship's journey originated more than three weeks ago.

On Jan. 3, the Osaka's crew beached the vessel on the Brambles sandbar to prevent the ship from capsizing after it began listing shortly after leaving port.

With the ship now secure, the big question is, "What will happen to all those luxury cars and SUVs, worth between $45 to $53 million?"

Hoegh 7.1.2

The Osaka's cargo of Jaguars, Land Rovers, Range Rovers, MINIs and even a singular $300,000 Rolls Royce Wraith was destined for the Middle East.

Their destiny is now murkier.

"There has been water ingress to the lower car decks," the ship's owner Hoegh Autoliners reported in a statement.

But the company added that only a small number of vehicles "have been affected by the water ingress."

Hoegh Osaka unload

Looking at the condition of the cars that have been driven off of the ship, they appear to be in better shape than expected.  Some have emerged completely unharmed, while others have suffered some body damage.

The cars are likely going to be crushed in a scrap yard.

This has happened before.

In 2006, the car carrier Cougar Ace— like the Hoegh Osaka — developed a severe list off of the coast of Alaska. On board were 4,700 brand-new Mazdas headed for American dealerships.

According to Car and Driver, the ship's entire cargo of factory-fresh cars was crushed in scrap yards in the Pacific Northwest. The total cost to Mazda and its insurers: $103 million.

We've reached out to Jaguar Land Rover for comment on the fate of its cars that were on the Osaka and will update you when we hear back from the company.

In the meantime, here are some of the vehicles, with screenshots taken from a YouTube video:

This Range Rover Evoque looks dealer-worthy.

This purple Jaguar XJL looks like it has emerged undamaged, as well.

This Land Rover Defender 90 suffered a few dents — which actually enhance the off-roader's rugged looks.

However, the dents on the rear door of this Range Rover Sport are less attractive.

Jaguar Land Rover's US CEO looks forward to a bright future for brands

$

Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged

Jaguar and Land Rover are together poised for quite the growth spurt.

Both brands have been closely entwined since 2008, when they were sold by Ford Motor Co. to India’s Tata Motors, and given the opportunity to broaden their future portfolios with some significant investment in product development and engineering.

Just over the past year we’ve gotten a much clearer vision of what that future will look like. Land Rover has revealed (and will soon bring to market) the 2016 Discovery Sport, an affordable and family-friendly crossover; meanwhile, Jaguar has revealed a new compact luxury sedan, the XE, and teased a future utility vehicle, the F-Pace. And together, the brands will be offering fuel-efficient diesel engines as an option on most of their U.S. lineup.

Last week, at a special invitation-only event allowing us a preview drive of the 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport, we caught up with Jaguar Land Rover North America president and CEO Joachim (Joe) Eberhardt to ask him about the Discovery Sport, as well as the growth of both brands.

Off-road capability is still very much present in the Discovery Sport; yet it seems that you’re choosing to emphasize the versatility a bit more than you did for LR2. Is ruggedness a different sell today than it was when the LR2 came out, and are you seeing third-row seating as a higher priority today?

I think that for Land Rover, from an overall brand-value perspective, off-road capability is still paramount. If you look at our brand model, we have capability—breadth of capability—as really the core brand value. And when we talk about the three families that make up the Land Rover brand moving forward, design and capability really is inherent in all three: Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender. In the secondary, brand-value layer, we then further differentiate. We have refinement for Range Rover as the primary positioning element, versatility on the Discovery, and durability and ruggedness for the Defender family. So it is true, versatility is key for the Discovery Sport, however the core brand platform of Land Rover in terms of capability is still there. Every Land Rover is built to be best in class from an off-road capability perspective.

In terms of the seven-place seating and third row, it’s true that’s a key element of the Discovery Sport, and in a way we’re the only ones in that size segment with that capability. That’s because customers are asking for the capability, even though they may not use it and need it every day. But for occasional use it’s a very nice added feature that will help us differentiate the car from its competitors.

In the U.S., it’s changing. The solution usually was a much bigger vehicle to do the same thing. I think there is a trend to fuel economy and fuel efficiency in the U.S., even now with low gas prices. In order to get the fuel economy, you can lower the engine size, but ultimately it’s weight, it’s aerodynamics, and it’s overall vehicle size. So getting the maximum amount of versatility and a flexible package is important for North America as well.

We’ve seen the compact crossover market growing above market average. It tripled in volume globally over the past five years, and in the U.S. last year it was close to a half a million vehicles in that segment. I think we can take the premium end of that segment, and with a vehicle like the Discovery Sport we should be able to grow volume over the LR2.

Given the change in fuel prices over the past seven or eight months, the price differential for diesel has become less favorable in America. Has that been cause to adjust your sales targets. For the next couple of years, what would constitute a sales success for diesels?

We still believe that in the medium and longer term, there is a strong case and need for diesels—not so much diesels per se, but their improved fuel economy and efficiency. In an SUV application, you also get improved torque...and you get an improved towing behavior because of the low-end torque. The other is driving range, which is improved because of the fuel economy. And then the downside of diesels in the past—the underperformance, the emissions, the noise—all of those are gone. As we have seen with the Discovery Sport, most customers don’t know anymore that they’re driving a diesel. We actually did a clinic in the U.S. where customers were driving cars, not knowing what the powertrain was, and most of them—I think all of them—didn’t even realize that they were driving a diesel.

We fully expect to roll out diesels across the entire Jaguar Land Rover portfolio, with the exception of the F-type. Over the next couple of years, we’ll see a fuel economy improvement of 25 to 30 percent. And as a result we’ll get a Range Rover and Range Rover Sport that get 25 mpg combined, 28 on the highway. Compared to the old-generation Range Rover, two years ago, with the diesel we see a 78-percent improvement in fuel economy.

If you look at those competitors that have diesels today, next to a traditional gas engine, they have a rate of about 15 to 20 percent now. If we get to 15 percent of total retail sales, I think we will be very happy and call this a success.

When might we see a new flagship Jaguar coupe? Any hints on how it might be positioned now that you could compete directly with Aston Martin?

I think we have a flagship coupe right now, and that’s called F-type. Beyond that, there are no plans at this point in time—no plans for an XK replacement. We’ve got our hands full the next couple of years launching the vehicles we’ve announced, the XE and the F-Pace, and I think we’ll fundamentally, dramatically change from a V-8 coupe and sedan company to a...I don’t want to say full portfolio...but certainly expanded portfolio company of performance and design oriented sedans and crossovers that appeal to a much wider audience than what we’ve had. From that, we should see a big increase in volume starting 2016.

What is your biggest hurdle or misconception on the brand or dealership level as you ramp up sales, and what are you doing to change that?

I think on Land Rover, right now, the biggest challenge is availability. We are for all intents and purposes, sold out on Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and LR4. We have about a six-month wait list for Range Rover, four-month on Sport, resulting in unheard-of levels for supply—9 and 12 days, respectively. So going forward, we need to continue to work with our colleagues in the UK to see if we can free up manufacturing capacity, and at this point, it’s a fight for production with my colleagues in other regions of the world. So that I would say is really a challenge, because customers do have options, and as we do know the U.S. consumer is not willing to wait long. We do have some very loyal Land Rover customers, but there is a limit to everything; and once you’ve waited for seven or eight months, maybe you’re not willing to wait any longer.

For Jaguar, the challenge is a brand perception for quality that’s not reflective of the actual quality. JD Power’s latest Initial Quality Survey showed Jaguar at number two. And we were number two in APEAL. You take those two together and I think it speaks very highly of the actual quality of the product. But the perception in the marketplace is still not a perception of the factual improvement. So we need to focus our communication around that fact, and we’re working with our dealers to find means and ways to overcome that hurdle. Customers are drawn to the brand. The awareness is up, higher than it’s been over the last few years. People are talking about it, they’re attracted to the design, the performance. But a lot of shoppers, they’re hesitant—almost afraid—to make the jump from another established competitor. There’s nothing wrong with a BMW, an Audi, a Lexus, a Mercedes, but in terms of perception, we need to overcome that and say it is time to get into a Jag.

Volvo just announced at the Detroit Auto Show that Chinese-built Volvo cars will be reaching the U.S. this summer. That’s a while earlier than we expected. Is there any possibility that Jaguar Land Rover vehicles might be built elsewhere for the U.S. in the future? And given the supply issues on the Land Rover side, looking ahead, how much of the brand’s U.S. image is wrapped up in British build origins?

At this point in time, there are no plans to build cars outside of the UK, for the U.S. I wouldn’t rule it out long-term, though. It’s an interesting question. Like any company, we’re looking at longer term global manufacturing footprint options. We’ve announced our joint venture in China; we’re actually starting operations there. We’ve announced assembly and manufacturing operations in Brazil and India. So we are starting to globalize our operations, significantly more than we’ve traditionally done. I don’t think we’ll see a Chinese-built car in the U.S. anytime soon, because the joint venture in China is for the specific purpose of providing cars for the local market. In the U.S. over the next decade or so will there be a car somewhere other than in the UK? Possibly. I think customers today are less concerned about the country of origin but more concerned about the brand promise that’s inherent in a product.

Our competitors have proven that you can build a quality car... I don’t think a Mercedes customer today worries too much that their C-Class maybe is coming from South Africa, their M-Class is coming from the U.S., and the CLA is coming from Hungary. I think 20 years ago that might have been a concern; but that’s been overcome by proof positive that you can build a quality car pretty much anywhere in the world. So in that respect it might be best that we not have a leadership role but be a fast follower.

Jaguar is making subtle changes to the 2016 F-Type

Jaguar F-Type R

The changes made to the new all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive stick-shift versions of the Jaguar 2016 F-Type are subtle, but substantive.

The F-Type is the first Jaguar sports car to use Electric Power Assisted Steering. Jaguar says the system provides power assistance only when needed, reduces fuel consumption, and cuts carbon dioxide emissions. A 770-watt Meridian audio system, keyless entry and ignition, 14-way power seats, and an InControl smartphone integration system are also standard.

All-wheel drive and an 8-speed QuickShift automatic transmission will be standard on the 2016 F-Type R coupe and convertible. Their 5.0-liter V-8 engine combines direct injection with a twin-vortex supercharger capable of generating 550 hp and 502 ft lbs of torque. The all-wheel-drive versions are differentiated from their stablemates by AWD badging on the rear, a redesigned hood and rear diffuser, body-color side sills, and body-color venturi on R models or valence exhaust tips on S models.

Default mode sends all of the engine’s torque to the rear axle. Under certain circumstances, up to 50 percent of the torque can be sent to the front axle instead. The cars’ weight balance was moved forward by only 1.2 percentage points compared to the rear-wheel-drive models. The all-wheel-drive system in the F-Type R is 176 pounds heavier than the standard F-Type’s rear-wheel-drive system, but it is still capable of going from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 186 mph.

The 380 hp V-6 F-Type S Coupe comes standard with rear-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, though it can be equipped with an optional 6-speed manual transmission.

The 2016 models will be available in late spring 2015, with pricing yet to be announced.

Here are the Jaguars, Land Rovers and Range Rovers that will appear in the new Bond Movie

James Bond Jaguar Land Rover Range Rover

The 24th film in the James Bond movie franchise will hit theaters later this year. As we inch closer to "Spectre's" November 6 release date, more details about all of the awesome cars that will be in the film are beginning to emerge.

Producers unveiled Bond's all-new Aston Martin DB10 in December. But now the other cars from the movie have been confirmed. In addition to the Aston, a trio of cars — courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover's Special Operations department — will feature in the film. We'll be seeing a Range Rover Sport SVR, a Jaguar C-X75, and a Land Rover Defender Big Foot.

As sleek as the the DB10 may be, the real scene stealer is the Jaguar C-X75, to be driven by Bond's villainous counterpart. The Aston and the Jag, meanwhile, will star in a major car chase through the streets of Rome.

The carbon-fiber C-X75 hybrid supercar concept first debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show to rave reviews and even managed to snag Autoweek's "Best in Show" award.

"This will be the finest looking and most innovative Jaguar ever created,” Jaguar head designer Ian Callum said. "Even in the world of supercars, we can still produce the most beautiful."

Jaguar C-X75 Bond

Unfortunately, the production version of the C-X75 was cancelled in 2013. Thankfully, the car will survive on the silver screen.

For Bond duty, the modified Jaguar supercars will built by the Advanced Engineering division of the Williams F1 team.

The Range Rover Sport SVR is Jaguar Land Rover's foray into SUV insanity. As quick as the 510 horsepower supercharged Range Rover Sport may be, the SVR takes it to a whole new level.

With 543 horsepower on tap, along with high-performance suspension, brakes, and tires, the SVR managed to lap Germany's notorious Nurburgring Nordschliefe test track in just 8 minutes and 14 seconds last year, setting a record for a production SUV.

Range Rover Sport SVR

The Land Rover Defender Big Foot and its massive 37 inch off-road tires make it the perfect go-anywhere vehicle for Bond's exotic locales.

Originally built by Jaguar Land Rover as a support vehicle for the company's Iceland, Finland, and Morocco product launches, the Big Foot has a slew of foul weather and foul terrain modifications.

According to the Dailymail, the scenes featuring the Range Rover Sport SVR and the Defender Big Foot have already been filmed. They are said to include a chase scene through the Austrian Alps.

Jaguar Land Rover's involvement with the 24th Bond flick has not been without drama. Last October, a fleet of modified movie cars valued at roughly $1 million was stolen from one of the company's facilities in Germany.

Here's the awesome car 'Furious 7' villain Jason Statham will drive in the movie — and we're not surprised (TTM)

Jaguar_F TYPE_R_Coupe

With "Furious 7"— the  latest installment of the "Fast and Furious" series —  set to kick off in a couple of weeks, we now know what car the film's villain will be driving.

It's a Jag!

Played by action star Jason Statham, the sinister Deckard Shaw opens the film behind the wheel of a white Jaguar F-Type.

Those who've been watching TV for past year shouldn't be all that surprised.

Jaguar is in the midst of its "Good to be bad" marketing campaign, launched last year with a gloriously sinister Super Bowl ad.

The ad, featuring such stalwart British movie villains as Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong — and Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston — explains why Brits make such great villains. Interspersed with the actors' speeches are shots of Jag's F-Type driving through London.

The campaign is meant to position the Jaguar as a sleek and attractive, yet naughty, alternative to the straight-and-narrow Mercedes and BMWs that dominate the luxury car segment.

And it seems to have worked, with Jaguar Land Rover notching its best sales year ever in 2014.

Like his fellow "Fast and Furious" characters, Statham's Shaw won't be confined to just one car. Throughout the film, Shaw will also be behind the wheel of a modified Maserati Ghibli and an Aston Martin Rapide.

And this isn't the only badness on film that we'll be seeing from Jag. The carmaker's terrifyingly gorgeous C-X75 will provide a wicked set of wheels for the villain in the upcoming James Bond flick, "Spectre."

Jaguar_F TYPE_Coup__ConvertibleThe Jaguar F-Type sports car is the company's highly praised follow up to the legendary E-Type of the 1970s. With power coming from an available 5.0-liter, 550-horsepower, supercharged V8, the sleek cat can rocket to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 186 mph.

"Furious 7" will hit theaters in the US April 3.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Jaguar Land Rover Ltd on Friday said it is recalling nearly 36,500 Range Rover Evoque sport utility vehicles (SUVs), after local media reported the British luxury carmaker used faulty gearboxes.

Jaguar Land Rover earlier apologised for gearbox issues via its microblog after being criticised by state television on Sunday along with peers Volkswagen AG and Nissan Motor Co.

The automaker is already under the spotlight of Chinese regulators investigating possible anti-competitive behavior in the world's largest auto market, where the firm has said slowing growth is likely to halve its sales expansion rate this year.

On Friday, Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement it is recalling 36,451 Evoques from model years 2014 and 2015 due to software-related complaints including "poor gear shift quality, increased transmission noise and the inability to select drive when the vehicle is restarted under certain conditions."

Jaguar Land Rover said it will upgrade gearbox software free of charge, and extend the warranty period of affected gearboxes to 7 years after the date of purchase from 3 years, or 240,000 km rather than 100,000 km, whichever comes first.

On Thursday, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) requested the recall in a statement on its website.

The automaker, owned by India's Tata Motor Ltd <tamo.ns>, must take immediate measures to recall and repair defective vehicles and extend their warranty period, the AQSIQ said.

London (AFP) - Indian-owned luxury car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover announced a £600 million ($894 million, 814 million euros) investment in advanced car manufacturing in Britain on Thursday.

The British car brand, which was bought by India's Tata Motors for $2.3 billion from Ford in 2008 at the height of the global financial crisis, said the investment showed its commitment to Britain's resurgent car industry.

"Jaguar Land Rover continues to demonstrate its unwavering support to the British automotive industry through sustained investments in advanced research, technology and innovation," Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth said in a statement.

"This investment, made here in the heartland of our UK business operations, signals the confidence we have in this region to support the creation, engineering and manufacturing of ultra-low emission, premium British products, today and in the future."

The largest portion of the investment is focused on the automaker's Castle Bromwich site in England's West Midlands, where £320 million will complete its development into "a global centre of excellence for lightweight vehicle manufacturing", the statement said.

The announcement came after a plan to double a design and engineering centre in Whitley in the West Midlands was revealed, part of a drive to create low-emission vehicles.

Meet the sexy new Jaguar XF sedan – that drove across a high wire in London!

Jaguar XF London

Jaguar Land Rover knows how to put on a good show.

Last year, the British luxury car maker created a full-blown musical to introduce the Jaguar XE compact sedan.

Before that, Land Rover rented out the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier and conducted a laser light extravaganza to introduce the Land Rover Discovery Concept.

Now, to debut its second generation XF, Jaguar sent the sexy luxury sedan across a pair of 787 ft.- long highwires over the waters of the Royal Docks in London's Canary Wharf – setting the world record for driving a car on a wire.

The XF is very imporant to Jaguar. As the automaker's answer to BMW's standard-bearing 5 Series, Mercedes' stalwart E-Class, and Audi's stunning A6, the XF has quite a difficult battle ahead for market share.

Fortunately, this new car comes at exactly the right time. Although the current XF — on sale since 2007 — had a good sales year in 2014, the sedan's competitiveness has begun to slip. Early 2015 numbers show sales have fallen significantly. In February, XF sales were down 22%, compared to the same period in 2014.

JAGUAR XF 2016

When the current XF first hit the market nearly a decade ago, it was unlike any Jag the we'd ever seen. The XF marked a sharp departure from the nostalgic, retro-themed dinosaurs that the brand had been selling.

Now, that groundbreaking car is getting a design makeover.

For 2016, the new XF gets a swoopy, coupe-like body. Designer Ian Callum and the Jag design team has accentuated the car's shoulderline. It runs right beneath the side windows, giving the a XF a sportier stance. Up front, Jag's signature mesh grille remains. As do the company's narrow, feline headlights, which have been updated to follow the company's new design theme – a theme that debuted with the compact XE sedan last year.

"The all-new Jaguar XF has a clear sense of calm and strength, both outside and inside – and I'm proud of my team for delivering that," Callum said.

The XF's new rear lights get curved LED highlights that evoke the brand's award-winning F-Type sports car.

Bottom line: This is one sleek new cat.

Jaguar XF 2016

Power for the new XF will come from a pair of the company's trusty 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engines. The base model will generate 340 horsepower, while the top-of-the-range car will crank out 380.

As with other new Jaguar models, the XF will also feature strengthened, lightweight aluminum-intensive construction. With 75% of the car made of aluminium, the second-generation car will be as much as 265 lbs. lighter than its roughly 4,000-lb. predecessor.

JAGUAR XF Interior

Inside, the XF is all restrained style. It's free of the gaudy touches that plague some of its competitors. The cabin is dominated by a large 10.2-inch touchscreen powered by Jaguar's new InControl Touch Pro infotainment system.

The 2016 Jaguar XF will make its official world debut at the 2015 New York International Auto Show in April.

With "Furious 7"— the  latest installment of the "Fast and Furious" series —  out in theaters on Easter weekend, we now know what car the film's villain will be driving.

It's a Jag!

Jason Statham is the bad guy, and his character — the sinister Deckard Shaw — opens the film behind the wheel of a white Jaguar F-Type.

Previous "Fast and Furious" villains have driven everything from a Honda S2000s to an Aston Martin Vanquish.

But those who've been watching TV for past year shouldn't be all that surprised to find the "Furious 7" baddie behind the wheel of a Jag.

Jaguar kicked off its "Good to be bad" marketing campaign last year with a gloriously sinister Super Bowl ad.

The ad, featuring such British movie villains as Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong — and Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston — plays on why Brits make such great evil dudes. Interspersed with the actors' speeches are shots of Jag's F-Type driving through London.

The campaign is meant to position the Jaguar as a sleek and attractive, yet naughty, alternative to the straight-and-narrow Mercedes and BMWs that dominate the luxury car segment.

Like his fellow "Fast and Furious" characters, Statham's Shaw won't be confined to just one car. Throughout the film, Shaw will also be behind the wheel of a modified Maserati Ghibli and an Aston Martin DB9.

And this isn't the only badness on film that we'll be seeing from Jag. The carmaker's terrifyingly gorgeous C-X75 will provide a wicked set of wheels for the villain in the upcoming James Bond flick, "Spectre."

With power coming from an available 5.0-liter, 550-horsepower, supercharged V8, the sleek cat can rocket to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 186 mph.

In addition to the top-of-the-line V8 coupe, the F-Type is also available in convertible and supercharged V6 variants.

Business Insider got the chance to spend a few hundred miles behind the wheel of both the coupe and convertible versions of the Jag and came away duly impressed by the sports car. We found the F-Type to be a capable high performance machine that's both luxurious and comfortable to drive, with an exquisitely styled exterior.

"Furious 7" hits theaters in the US April 3.

China's knockoff Range Rover is back – and there's nothing Jaguar Land Rover can do about it

Landwind X7 Jaguar Land Rover is in the midst of a major sales push in China. In order to have enough cars to sell, the company has constructed a $1.8-billion factory to build the Range Rover Evoque crossover.

Given that kind of commitment, the people at Jaguar Land Rover were not happy when a Chinese car company unveiled an Evoque facsimile, called the "Landwind X7," last year at the Guangzhou Auto Show.

Now the Landwind X7 is again on display, this time at the 2015 Shanghai Auto show. Not surprisingly, the controversial crossover has drawn the ire of Jaguar Land Rover.

"I really regret that all of a sudden copy-paste is coming up again," Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralph Speth said at a press conference. "That will not help the reputation of China, of Chinese industry at all."

When the X7 debuted last November, Jaguar chief designer Ian Callum tweeted out photos of the Landwind. The bemused design legend wryly pointed out the aesthetic similarities between the Chinese car and the Evoque.

News of the knockoff Evoque first leaked last Aprilwhen Landwind reportedly patented a vehicle called the "E32" that looks to be the predecessor to the production X7

In a statement to the Wall Street Journal last November, Jaguar Land Rover made it clear that once an investigation is complete, the company will "take whatever steps are appropriate to protect its intellectual property."

However, JLR believes China's intellectual property laws won't be able to provide the company with sufficient legal recourse.

“There are no laws  to protect us, so we have to take it as it is," Speth told reporters. "In Europe, we can be protected against this kind of copy-paste in the design language, in the features but also the technology."

"You can’t be protected in China," Speth added.

Range Rover Evoque 2015

According to FT's Tom Mitchell, a representative from Landwind dismissed JLR's accusations as "irresponsible."

Landwind, a joint venture between China's Changan Auto and Jiangling Motors, produces a series of SUVs sold predominantly for the Chinese domestic market. However, Landwind did make history in 2005 when it became the first Chinese automaker to export its vehicles to Europe.

The 1989-'98 Isuzu Rodeo-based X6 was imported to the Netherlands for a short time, but didn't sell well, after news surfaced of the car's spectacularly poor showing at Germany's ADAC crash tests, scoring a 0 out of 5

According to Bloomberg, The Landwind X7 is expected hit showrooms this summer with a price tag of around $24,000, while the Chinese market Evoque starts at around $72,000.

A 1973 Jaguar E-Type was found in a barn – and could fetch $110,000 at auction

jaguar_100508850_l

Though it's oft repeated, it's repeated for a reason: the Jaguar E-Type remains one of the greatest looking vehicles ever made. On top of that, it's a joy to drive. Especially if you can get your hands on one equipped with a 4.2-liter straight six under the long hood and a convertible roof to let the wind and sun into your wonderful world.

The Series I 1/2 cars remain this writer's preferred generation. Still, even the later V-12 E-Types were glorious to look at, and one of them is about to get new life as it heads to auction.

This 1973 Jaguar E-Type has been owned by the same family since the time it was purchased new. It's a Series III, which means its packing that oft-maligned 5.3-liter V-12 engine. It does, however, come equipped not with the joy-sucking automatic but instead the manual gearbox. Additionally, this is a convertible version with seating for four, as the two-passenger-only fixed-head coupe was discontinued by this point.

jaguar_100508848_lThe car passed from father to son and then to the next generation, yet it was rarely driven. This E-Type shows just 7,740 miles on its odometer, with 40 of those having come after a recent bit of restoration work. This was done to get the engine freshened up and to have the car pass MOT. It now sits ready to cross the block at the upcoming Silverstone Auctions, where it's expected to fetch a hammer price somewhere between $110,000 and $135,000.

That's a lot of coin for a V-12 car, but this one is all original and the mileage is extremely low. Additionally, it seems that people are willing to pay a bit more lately for these twelve-cylinder cars. Some fool person paid $135,000 for a 1973 2+2 coupe earlier in the year. Sure, that car looked very clean... but it's the earlier straight-sixes that have the real style and charm (...and value).
